On December 27, evening, when JM was surfing on the net, he stumbled on his friend's site and he told me that there are whale sharks in Oslob. Of course, I felt excitement when I heard that awesome news. Since that was our RD, so right away, we packed our things and went to Oslob, again, this was unplanned. There’s no more need to go to Donsol, Sorsogon, to catch a glimpse of the famous butanding (whale shark). These gentle giants have been spotted off Barangay Tan-awan, Oslob town, Cebu, since October. Lately they have become a magnet for local and foreign tourists. So priceless.

Today is the last day of 2011, and this is the first time that I felt too much excitement. Looking back at this year I have to say that it has probably been the most interesting and activity filled in my whole life. There have been very interesting events, trips and dramas, even more interesting heart memoirs.

2010 was a painful year in my life, thank God that Year 2011 is very irreconcilable.
Career

Long time ago, I promised that I would never go back in a call center industry, maybe because my first experience was very traumatic, but then again, since I need to cast away myself from my hometown for the mean time, Cebu was my chosen destination, and decided to become an empathic peson. And I found myself as an agent in Sykes. Sykes is my new home. I found beautiful people, yes, beautiful people. I thought that my stay in this company would last not for long but thankfully, I was regularized by my beautiful TL, I thought, she was so strict but I was grateful that I was transferred to her Team because if it wasn't, I think, up until now, I kept on hopping from one center to another. What's more, from a level one agent, I slowly moving up in a corporate ladder, again, that was because my TL is very supportive of me. Of course, there are people who kept on encouraging me to fight and face the challenge.

Fashion

I know the fact that I truly love fashion. Well, what do you expect from a Gay like me. 2010 was a scarf year, this year, it is not all about scarf, coats and jeans, it is all about hair color. I became an addict in dyeing my hair that made me very flashy in our office because I unceasingly kept on changing my hair color. Well, as what I always tells them, MONEY IS NOT AN ISSUE.

Vacation and Party Galore

This year is very incomparable since this is the only year that I skied in to different islands from the very enchanting Camotes, to the world famous Boracay, then to the exotic Malapascua and to the newly found home of Whale Sharks, Oslob. Not only that, since Cebu is hailed as one of the best places to unwind and to party at, so almost every weekend, the heat is on... party, drinks, food and to complete...BOYS. Well, you can't blame me, there is no curfew here, and hotels, party clubs, pubs, bars cafes and restaurants are in strategic locations and the spots are advantageous, the it never lacked aesthetic places that will surely give you a shake off from all the stress and tiring moments that every one encounters in his or her every day routine, may it be at school, or at work and this is the reason why I always stumbled myself in IT Park after my shift because I love sipping my coffee while watching beautiful people in corporate and rugged attire walking in a very progressive city.

Affair

I was labeled PROMISCUOUS, not once but hundreds of times, but from my friends. And yes, that's true. I am AWESOME! That's what I always hear from them after the session. But when this man knocked on my door, everything changed. My previous relationships were all so so but this time, totally different. He is the best thing to ever happen to me. He adores me and I him. He deals with my physical attributes and personality and accepted me of who I am. I have never felt so loved and am blessed to be with this Guy. Now, I realized that as long as the two people love each other, gender shouldn't make a difference.

I know that each of us has a story to tell, my 2011 story is full of happiness, but I know that in this year, thousands of people suffered and died. I am thankful that God hears my Pray and that is why, I always say my indebtedness. I pray for the salvation of humanity. and I always aspire that this coming 2012 is much better than 2011, not only for me, but also for my family, friends and entire humanity... more so, for our mother earth.

No matter what happen, I have no regret in life, in fact, I am happy...very very contended.

Off to Malapascua

Last month’s escapade in Boracay was beyond doubt remarkable.

This month, there is another story to tell.

Malapascua, the Little Boracay in the Philippines.

Malapascua is pretty much the perfect island! It is really striking with truly white sand and turquoise water. Malapascua is one of the best dive areas in the country because of Its Thresher Shark, and Malapascua is one of the few places in the world where you can find it throughout the year. But we saw no Sharks when we got in there.

Aside from the beautiful sunrise and sunset, what made me wowed when I got in there was the foreigners, well, any tourist spots we can see lots of them, but this time, it is unusual because you can see them NAKED. AWESOME!!! I took lots of photos of naked foreigners while they were walking along the shore or sunbathing at beaches. First time, ever. But I didn’t post those photos in here because I vastly discouraged pornography, hehehe. Maybe a bit too touristy in a sense, but the beauty of the beach overpowers it!

There are really nice restaurants in Malapascua and I highly recommend not to eat and to stay at Blue Corals Resort and Mabuhay Restaurant because their Customer Service is hilarious and pathetic. I don’t want to write this one in verbatim but all I could say, in my entire life, I experienced to eat a whole grilled chicken without drinking anything because there place won’t offer service water.

But moving on, my experience in Malapascua was like a ride on a roller coaster that at the end of it, you will appreciate, LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL and LIFE IS FULL OF SURPRISES.

I love watching Amazing Race, but when we went to Cebu Zipline at Busay, OM! I realized, I am not an extreme adventurist, I am really a certified sex enthusiast only.

We tried the superman Zipline, Wire walking, Canope Walking, Bumper Falling and the last act, Bumper Swing, that made me scare the crap out of me.

I’m not afraid of heights, but I am afraid of falling. Its this rush that most free solo-ers live off of, but unfortunately, I’m not one of them.

But to sum it all, atleast, I tried to scare and at the same time, challenge myself. Ooops, I forgot to mention, whenever I always do this type of activity, I always remember my friend's statement that made me smile always, "Bakit ako magbayad kung tatakutin ko lang naman ang sarili ko, wagna lang uie, salamat na lang sa offer!" LOLs.

Bora, Bora, Bora, everyone's wildest dream.

When I was a kid, I kept on dreaming going to Boracay, I don't know why, maybe I was really enticed because of the fact that it's a tourist destination because of its fine white sand and crystal blue sea, of course, lots of foreigners.

Then, years passed, that eagerness of mine became intense until one day, I just decided to go to Boracay, unplanned.

BTW, another fact why I wanted to go to Bora because usually, if you've gone to Bora, parang sikat ka, hahaha. Sabi nga ng teammate ko, whenever she's in Bora, she feels so gorgeous!!!

I packed my things right away, of course, panic buying ang drama, lots of underwear.

The moment that I reached Bora, woah! Kahit may bagyo, still lots of turistas and of course, and totoo nga, in Bora, laging Summer.

But when I was in Bora, I realized the good side and bad side. The positive thing in Bora is that, walang pakialaman, wear what you like! Kahit mag gown ko o magbikini, maglakad ka along the shore, IN ka! Of course, makacontemplate ka talaga, you are really in paradise. Kaso the bad thing is, Bora is very commercialized nowadays, yung nakikita natin sa TV, pag andun ka, super panget, yun yung Station 1-3, if you want to experience the Real Boracay, you have to go sa likod, pero magasto, dolyares! But yan nga ang purpose why you go to Bora, ryt?

Before I left the world renowned island, I thought for a sec, sayang, di na paradise ang Bora, unlike before, ung virgin pa ang isla.

I am fond of watching Gay movies and I always make a critique after I watched the film. I always criticize those movies using the approaches that I had learned during my college days. Usually, those movies were the fruits of the imagination of the writers and the directors, that is why, the plot, the scenes, the actors were all awe-inspiring. But not until today, when my officemate had forwarded me an e-mail in my Outlook about a 13-year-old boy who shot his alleged 16-year-old boyfriend, then himself in SM Pampanga.

I was appalled; it is hard to believe that it really happened. Due to disillusionment and jealousy, it can bring into being such strong emotions that he cannot think rationally and may act on his impulses without thinking about the consequences, known as Crime of Passion.

I looked at their photos, sighs, they were young, pleasurable and handsome, and I am so gloomy. Not because I am gay, not because I understand them, it is because they ruined and wasted their life. I can't blame Jake Emerson Perez because he was just a simple guy, an amorous narcissist who wanted to show his real feeling toward Jonathan. I can't blame Jonathan Salvador as well if he has another guy, Paulo Landayan, because that's how the gay world works, gays or bisexuals are polygamous.

I know that they are the characters in this story, but ever since, I always encourage myself not to engage to any serious relationship because I myself is polygamy and I know that gays/bisexuals are intimate, green-eyed, theatrical and compulsive.

But in the end, I realized that Jake, I understand him. It is about the love and distrust that he felt and there is a very big despair for that. It wasn't a suicide endeavor; it was an escape from everything dreadful. When we feel too much grief, we're not in control - we make our own pain and we can stop it whenever we want. Physical pain relieves mental anguish. But Jonathan’s life must not be taken away; Jake didn’t have the right to take his life and Jonathan’s. He has his own life and he must let him happy. They're too young for this and the future waits for them, but now it’s gone, they don't have the chances. Life is so unfair but we have our own happiness that God created for us, and we must live for it.

My Solo Oslob Adventure

Because I was exhausted, I asked for a one day Vacation Leave from my Supervisor last week, and good thing, the approval was no sweat at all. Then, I kept on searching on the net where I can spend my one day VL, then, I was enticed by this place, OSLOB, history + nature + silence= definitely, this is the right place for me. So, even the place is stranger, as long as I know how to read the signs and able to ask the directions, I am sure, I can reach my destination. When I arrived in Oslob, damn, though I was so sweat, burned because of the heat of the sun, I can't help myself but to appreciate this fantastic place... a place where the ruins of the Spanish Architectures are facing to this beautiful see. While I was looking at the open sea, breathing the fresh air, hearing no sound but only the sound of the nature, I uttered silently,I love doing this.

I know that I am not the only person in this world who loves to watch movies; there are millions of us who are movie buffs. But since Hollywood is so well-known, American films are so ordinary and I am sick with its formula.

When I stepped on the real world, I started watching movies from other countries, such as European films, Australian Films and Asian Films, honestly, their movies were commendable, but since College, I was hooked on Korean Films, say it, all genres (Drama, Comedy, Action and Horror), they are good at it. I haven’t watched yet a Korean Film that is so distasteful.

But as what I observed, no matter what the genre is, Korean Films always end sorrowful and fatal, protagonist dies at the end very habitually. I don’t know if it has something to do with their culture but their formula is absolutely even, unlike in Western Movies, tend to pursue the 'happy ever after' formula where the hero triumphs over the greatest of odds, finds love and happiness, and occasionally, save the world.

But then again, I really love to watch movies, movies from diverse Cultures. But it is so gloomy to watch a handsome character dies at the end of the film. What do you expect, I am a queer guy. LOLz.

After I graduated college, I was really hooked to her songs, she was absolutely great! A story that's been ten years in the telling on page and screen,Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 concludes with a flurry of closing moments that reach for poignancy, but achieve an odd combination of feeling both interminable and strangely rushed. A film with capital letter emotions, but sometimes lacking the performance power to pull them off, Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows seizes every opportunity to stun visually, and will most likely do very, very well. It's very good, too. But I still wanted just a little bit more. I will surely miss this epic.

(2009). Damn, the movie is superb. If you watch the movie, you could remember the Oscar Award Winning Musical Chicago, it is because the director of both films is the same, Rob Marshall. I really idolized him.

The screen rebirth of the stage musical continues with Nine, Rob Marshall’s smart, sexy, occasionally sorrowful film adaptation of the 1982 Broadway show about an Italian movie director who won’t grow up - and when it comes to women just can’t say no. On Broadway, the show has gathered something of a cult following. So it has in musical theatre circles in London, where the Donmar mounted the local premiere in 1996.
Now along comes the Full Hollywood Treatment, with an Italian-accented Daniel Day Lewis cast unexpectedly - and brilliantly - as the crisis-plagued Guido Contini, who has a movie due to start shooting in ten days. The problem? Not only has Guido yet to write a single word of the script, but he is juggling the increasingly clamorous demands of various women, ranging from his mother (an impossibly elegant Sophia Loren) to Carla, his mistress (Penelope Cruz, all long, writhing legs and frayed nerves).

Guido’s muse, the screen siren Claudia (Nicole Kidman, hair tumbling like a follicular waterfall), figures tantalisingly on film posters all over town - the setting is Rome and environs, ca. 1965 - while his neglected wife, Luisa, none too patiently looks on. Marion Cotillard brings a misty-eyed intensity to that role while batting one of the composer Maury Yeston’s most shimmering numbers, “My Husband Makes Movies,” out of the ballpark.

On stage, the show functions as a series of turns threaded together by the adult Guido’s reckoning with his emotionally arrested self; the title, “Nine,” embraces both the play’s celluloid source, Fellini’s era-defining “8-1/2,” and the age at which young Guido was initiated into sex by a local whore (a part taken on screen by a devouringly libidinous Fergie, of The Black Eyed Peas).

Its narrative bolstered by screenwriters Michael Tolkin and the late Anthony Minghella, the film for all its flights of carnal fancy sweeps us into Guido’s protracted nervous breakdown. His head often bowed in desperation or shame, Day Lewis has charisma to burn as a creator who is all burned out, and his scenes with costume designer, and confidante, Lilli (Judi Dench at her warmest and most wry) keep us on the side of a damaged soul who in lesser hands could simply be a narcissist. Best of all, this ever-protean actor can, it turns out, sing.

The result makes for a far more introspective work than “Chicago,” Marshall’s last stage-to-screen musical transfer, and one best approached not as a literal transcription of the show but as its own ravishing-looking beast. (Quite a few of the songs from the stage version have been cut.) And as if to honour his own theatrical origins, Broadway veteran Marshall near the end groups the performers on and around a balcony in what amounts to a would-be curtain call, and why not? All concerned should take a bow.

On my first year in Manila, I was tempted by my Landlady’s son to go on a spiritual expedition with him, the Visita Iglesia. Actually, I had no idea what was that and because I am an adventurer, so I went with him with his friends and I was amazed because even it was so exhausting visiting 14 churches in Manila by foot under the scorching heat of the sun, but so gratifying; spiritually and visually. Unluckily, I don’t have a cam when I was in high school, so I got no chance to capture the churches that I’d visited.

Ten years later, yesterday, I decided to do it again, this time, ALONE, here in Cebu City. Yes, I am still an alien in this land but still, it didn’t hold me back to do that again.

I woke up as early as 5 in the morning, grab my shawl, map, headset, cam, 1liter of water, umbrella, fan, phone and wore a comfy clothes because I knew that the weather would be totally burning.

My journey was totally tremendous. If I don’t know where would be my next target, I kept on asking to traffic enforcer, guards, driver, passengers, worshippers and bystanders. HEADS UP, DON’T ASK TO VENDORS BECAUSE THEY WON’T HELP YOU UNLESS YOU WILL BUY SOMETHING FROM THEIR GOODS. To all the people who really assisted me to reach my destinations, thank you, thank you so much.

Again, it was so wearing because churches here in Cebu City are too far from each other except in Colon Area but in the end, even I was so drenched of my sweat, very dehydrated and starving, very gloomy because of the heat of the sun, a smile was painted on my face still. I felt I was absolute.

Personally, I agree with this! My family knew already since I was 4 years old that I am gay. But it's my choice not to be Gay totally. I even joined Boy Scout till I got my Eagle Scout Badge. I joined men's sports and I am good at it. But it didn't cross in my mind to become a drag queen. BUt as I grow older, I noticed that as young as four years old, these little boys are too gay, they cross dressed already, put make up and speak vulgar and gay lingos. When I arrived here in Cebu, one of my co-applicants told me that her guilty pleasure is the Big Bang Burger. At that time, I was curious how big is that Big Bang Burger. And at last, I met that Big Bang Burger last week when Roni and I went to Casa Verde, just what I had tought, super huge, that’s why, I changed my mind and I found myself devouring large portions of Surf and Turf while Roni ordered the Baby Back Ribs. Nakakaloka ang Ribs! The moment they placed our order on our table, I silently murmered, OH MY GOD, PARANG ULAM NA TO NG DALAWANG PAMILYA. Every cuisine is super huge and super yummy and worth the money! SUPERB! Wala kasi to sa Davao, LOL. In the end, I was able to finish my order but Roni didn’t make it, hahaha.

A verdant, picturesque summer idyll; two young boys frolic in a countryside lake in various states of undress. The affectionate contact between the lads clues us that they’re more than platonic friends. Once summer’s over, the responsibilities of the real world set in and Su-Min returns to his studies and the small Seoul flat he shares with super hetero player wannabe roommate, who knows which team Su-Min plays for and accepts him regardless, making playful threats to drag his friend to the nearest cathouse to cure Su-min of his boy-love proclivities.

Patching in work between classes and a full-time job, Su-min hires himself as a chauffeur and one call leads him to Jae-min, a handsome businessman who makes a deflected pass at the college student. The evening is not forgotten as Su-min is saved from the layoffs afflicting the bottling plant he works for by Jae-min, who happens to be the factory owner’s son. Insulted, Su-min rashly quits his rescued post and attempts to make ends meet as a restaurant dishwasher. Overworked and underpaid, Su-min has hit the bottom of the financial barrel when he turns up to work as a “host” in a sleazy bar/brothel run by a hissy queen and inhabited by guys like gay-for-pay Jung-tae, who earns on his back (- and other places) to keep his girlfriend happy. The innocent orphan pushes aside his revulsion at having strange men paw him (- and much worse) and buries it in the piles of money he’s now able to earn. With a rooftop flat of his own and a poodle, all is well for the teenage hustler until the businessman from long ago drops in determined to connect with Su-min. Their trysts rough and unfeeling, Su-min treats the self-loathing, closeted Jae-min with all the abhorrence he seems to crave. Jae-min’s powerful, wealthy parents have pushed him into a marriage with a suitable young woman he does not love. His only release is in the arms of the young prostitute who is unnerved and angry when Jae-min stalks him obsessively at the club, stopping him from taking other johns. Against his better judgment, Su-min begins to return Jae-min’s feelings and dares to lower his guard against the lonely, besotted man from the right side of the tracks.

Once he accepts Jae-min, the two begin the happiest time of either of their lives, spending days on beaches far from the pressures of Seoul and nights whispering in each others’ arms. Su-min leaves his hosting duties at the gay brothel and is content to be Jae-min’s kept man. The only fly in the ointment is that minor issue of the fiancée that Jae-min has neglected to tell Su-min about. Jae-min’s hardnosed mother is aware of her son’s homosexuality, but that won’t stop her from threatening her only child with a public outing if she doesn’t get the advantageous wedding she’s been planning. Jae-min abandons his lover without a word; leaving the confused Su-min to turn up at Jae-min’s flat where he’s greeted by Jae-min’s betrothed and leaves with an invitation to their wedding. Once the miserable Jae-min turns up at Su-min’s flat, Su-min questions him about why he’s played him so badly and what their relationship meant. Was it because Su-min was poor? Was it because he was uneducated? Su-min offers to change everything about himself and be loyal forever if Jae-min will stay with him and Jae-min walks away wordlessly. The situation has reversed as Su-min becomes obsessed with his lost love. Bolstered by a public snub by Jae-min, Su-min takes a misguided vengeance for his broken heart that threatens to shatter them both.

Wonderful this. Truly rare and very special. Dark, unflinching and provocative, No Regret manages to transcend any preconceptions and reveals itself as a sweetly emotional romantic adult drama edged nicely with some droll comedy that anyone would adore. The gay elements of the piece are authentically and brilliantly rendered; No Regret features a variety of characters living different parts of the gay spectrum. Su-min is perfectly comfortable in his homosexuality and has love and support from friends, while Jae-min is forced to hide his nature and hates himself for his needs until he meets Su-min. The brothel keeper, Madame, is our resident queen with a catty remark meant to hide a sentimental heart. Adorable Ga-ram is the naïve country waif who turns up at the host bar blinded by the lights of the big city. Blithely happy to work in the brothel and in love with the thought of being in love, Ga-ram is like a younger, more optimistic version of Su-min and the older orphan takes the younger under his wing. The examination of gay life in Korea both out in the open and on the down-low - as in Jae-min’s case - and the placement of much of the story in the host bar are fascinating and ring true in any culture. No Regret’s wonderful cinematography does as much as any of the actors to capture the different elements of the film. The tawdry male brothel is never shot in more than half-light; shading the clandestine proceedings and shadowing the pathos of the men who use and often fall in love with the rent-boys. Bright, colour-saturated outdoor scenes highlight Su-min’s joyful moments with Jae-min and his friend and brothel brother, Ga-ram. Jae-min’s cold world away from Su-min is filmed in patrician sepia tones and under harsh fluorescent lights.

The cast is incredible. The two leads, Lee Young-hoon as Su-min and Lee Han as Jae-min have a heartbreaking chemistry. From the start, you’ll want to see them end up together. The sensitive portrayals of their characters, who have each lived lives of loss & regret in their own ways, make it impossible to dislike either one. No pain on the retinas that the each of the leads is exceedingly handsome and yaoi-rific. Both actors, particularly Lee Young-hoon, boldly handle the film’s graphic sexuality. Su-min’s first night in the brothels stripping down and doing an increasingly frenzied table dance for a customer hypnotically captures the disillusioned teen’s palpable humiliation and resignation. Brave stuff. Kim Dong Wook plays the sweet, bubbly Ga-ram, who’s like a hustler version of Pollyanna; puppy dog cute, he’s always happy and smiling and adores his mentor Su-min. A special mention to Jeong Seung-gil, whose brilliantly timed sidelong delivery provides much of the film’s comedy as the waspish, money-hungry Madame. Each of the characters in No Regret is written vividly and has a rich life onscreen and none of them, like the film they inhabit, are forgettable.

There is one sour note in No Regret; the lovelorn third act revenge Su-min exacts on Jae-min sends the film way further in melodrama territory than it ever needed to go. The butch act of payback is the campiest thing in the entire movie (- unless you count Madame’s slap-happy fighting style). Luckily, the rest of the film is so strong that your mental editor will allow you to use excise the distraction and get back to enjoying the rest of the picture.

Director Leesong Hee-il has made a brave and beautiful film that breaks boundaries not only by prominently portraying Asian sexuality, still a taboo subject, but also that between two men. What makes No Regret outstanding is its capturing a love story so true and aching and unforgettable, it crosses gender lines completely.

Go see it while you can.

I keep on telling to my new found friends here in Cebu that I haven’t toured yet the island, Cebu, and if given a chance to tour the place, of course, I would grab it right away without thinking for a second thought.

And it became a fact YESTERDAY.

Before our shift ends, they invited me to go with them to Lapu-lapu. I was thrilled.

One of them has motorcycle, so, they spoke highly of me to joyride with George so that I will luxuriate in the view. Since that was the motion of the body, I agreed.

I thought that my adventure would be a great fun, but everything was a huge ruination. I couldn’t enumerate every occurrence but all I could say that we were travelling while it was raining cats and dogs. Question, who among of you guys love to ride a motorcycle in the middle of the rain by accident wearing only a shirt? None, right? I admit that I really like when it rains but at that moment, while I was so wet, I told myself, don’t do this again, lesson learned.

Oh I forgot, before that unbelievable pour, I thought the Sand Siblings (Gaara and Temari) were there because there was a combination of strong wind and sand verged upon us, an awfully awful scene, good thing I always bring my face mask to protect my rotten lips.

To distress myself, we had our first stop at Jollibee and I ate and ate. To those who know me very well, don’t be surprised if I am eating now at Jollibee, I am not really a Jobee-fan but I have no choice, Jobee is everywhere here in the island.

Then, the gang arrived, laughing and telling me that they knew that I was already enraged. CORRECT! Well, they can’t blame me—I am a faggot!

After that, we went to our final destination- NORA’s DEN.

Then, everyone was irked and disappointed, so, we went to Family Farm. They have string acoustic players with a vocalist to entertain the customers—as they yada-yada to me. But yesternight, I witnessed a harpist only playing lullaby.

Honestly, even I felt disgusted because I was so dirty dirty because of that tricycle, but since the food was tasty and the price is average, it changed my mood. This was one of the better meals I had in the Island.

To Appoll3, Josh and Liz, Netz and George, I had a great with you guys and hope this won’t be the last escapade.

My Review on Eternal Summer

Another one of these down-tempo Taiwanese dramas? In a sense, but one that quite openly deals with male homosexuality. A subject still prone to shock in some parts of our world. Apart from that, Eternal Summer simply proves to be among the best of its peers, enough reason to put it in the spotlight.

Leste Chen started out with Heirloom, a stylish and atmopsheric horror flick that didn't revolve around gore or scares. Such films are pretty hard to market so it wasn't too surprising his first didn't land him much success. Eternal Summer is a very different film and reaches out to a more typical Taiwanese arthouse crowd. Much easier to sell and so the praise he received for it was accordingly. The world isn't fair, nothing much you can do about that.

Even though Eternal Summer is considered gay-themed, it's actually a bit more complex than that. Central to the story are three characters who form a perfect love triangle. Carrie loves Jonathan who quickly discovers his heart lies elsewhere. He is secretly in love with his best pal Shane, while Shane is slowly falling for the charms of Carrie. Enough romantic troubles for a solid 90 minutes of film.

The plot thickens as the relationships between the three become more complex. Plenty of opportunities for melodrama and epic emotions, but Chen keeps everything under control, maintaining a somewhat lighter atmosphere and playing down some of the more emotional scenes. Not as drastic as seen in Japanese cinema, but it's nice to see these themes handled without 90 minutes of aching sobs and puppy eyes.

Chen is obviously raised on Taiwanese aesthetics. Even though his visual style is more colorful and a tad more stylized, some very typical Taiwanese elements surface in this film. Mainly the day scenes in nature, combining vivid blues and greens, will appear very familiar to fans of Taiwanese cinema. Visually Eternal Summer is a little more varied though, sporting some truly stunning shots and scenes with strong singular colors. Not the major leap in style that some others made, but good progression nonetheless.

The soundtrack brings a similar experience. Mostly subdued piano music weaving a nice setting but feeling just a little too familiar, though from time to time Chen shift gears to music with more balls. In particular the track during the party scene, pretty cool stuff. Acting is very strong too, all three main characters putting in very solid performances. Not the easiest of parts as some on-screen openness was required, but the three of them handle it extremely well.

Eternal Summer is a pretty straightforward arthouse film, but one that does things just a little better than average and gives you these tiny flashes of brilliance which lift it above the competition. Just don't expect anything earth shattering. I'm pretty sure this film won't convert many people to Taiwanese cinema, but for those who already have a soft spot for it Eternal Summer will come as a welcome addition to the collection.

After only two films Chen is well on his way to become a personal favorite. He has a keen eye and is quite versatile. Eternal Summer is a lighthearted, dramatic and somewhat dreamy film about three kids that share a little too much love for each other. A strong blend of puberal wonder and melancholic musings.
